Hace unos días un amigo (gracias, Viejo) me descubrió a este fotógrafo. Arnold Odematt trabajó haciendo fotos para la policía de tráfico suiza durante más de 40 años. Al llegar a un accidente, tomaba las fotografías para la investigación y el seguro; luego, unas cuantas más para sí mismo. Al cabo del tiempo, recogió estas imágines en un cuerpo de trabajo llamado Karambolage. Lo más insólito de esta serie, en mi opinión, es que no aborda el accidente desde una perspectiva documental –que sería lo más obvio, por otra parte-. A pesar de lo grave de la situación, en las fotos no hay ni un atisbo de drama o tragedia. Ni siquiera tensión. De hecho, las imágenes son de una sobriedad y sencillez tan leves que resultan casi hipnóticas. Pero, ojo, tampoco se identifican pretensiones poéticas. Escuchad el Autobahn de Kraftwerk y veréis cómo todo encaja.

I discovered this photographer a few days ago through a friend of mine (thanks, Viejo). Arnold Odematt worked taking pictures for the Swiss traffic police for more than 40 years, between the 40s and 90s. Upon arriving at the site of a car crash, he took the photographs for the police and insurance reports; after that, he used to take a few more for himself. Years later, he collected those images in a body of work called Karambolage. The most unusual thing about this series is, in my opinion, the fact that it does not deal with the car crash from a documentary point of view (which would be the obvious choice). Despite the seriousness of the situation, there is not a hint of drama or tragedy in the photos. Nor even tension. In fact, the images are so simple and light that they end up feeling almost hypnotic. Nevertheless, I do not identify any poetic intentions either. Listen to Autobahn, by Kraftwerk, and you will see how it all makes perfect sense.
