Con la excusa de una invitación tengo la oportunidad de visitar un par ciudades suizas durante cuatro días. Meto los pies también en la vida de mi anfitrión, que me ofrece hospedarme con él. Al regreso, mirando las fotos, me he acordado del cuadro de Magritte, aquel de la pipa que decía ceci n’est pas une pipe (esto no es una pipa). Como bien se encargó de recordarnos uno de los personajes autóctonos, a pesar de lo que se ve en las imágenes y en contra de lo que pueden insinuar, eso no es Europa. La pulcritud y el orden extremos -ausencia de cualquier elemento “no deseable”- hacen que lentamente uno se percate de que, efectivamente, no lo es. Pensar en lo que se sustenta ese estatus excepcional puede molestar a muchos. En los tiempos que corren, Suiza puede no ser apta para estómagos sensibles.
With the excuse of an invitation, I recently had the opportunity to visit a couple of Swiss cities for four days. I also took a look into my host’s life, who kindly offered for me to stay with him. Now, looking at the pictures, I cannot help but remember the painting by Magritte, that one of the pipe and the text saying ceci n’est pas une pipe (this is not a pipe). As one of the locals reminded us, despite what you see in the images and against what they may suggest, Switzerland is not Europe. The extreme neatness and order, the absence of anything “undesirable”, make you slowly realize that indeed it is not Europe. Thinking about why this country maintains its exceptional status will make some people very upset. In this time and age, Switzerland may not be suitable for sensitive stomachs.
