Una semana intensa en la que el grupo ha grabado su primer EP, lleno de guitarras enérgicas, suaves melodías y la inconfundible voz de Sixto Jiménez. La publicación se espera para antes del verano. No sean impacientes.

Hace ya un par de meses que me mudé. Ahora, cuando las cosas parecen asentarse, comienzan los pequeños dolores. Una especie de estrés postraumático. Hoy me he acordado muy intensamente de mi amigo Luis, un impresionante batería junto al que he tenido la suerte de pasar muchas horas -sobre todo de noche-. Es además un cascarrabias, y me ha dicho que me odia tantas veces que ya estoy seguro de que no es verdad. Aquí dejo una foto que le saqué hace tiempo.

It has been a couple of months since I moved. Now that things seem to be settling down, the small pains begin. Like a kind of posttraumatic stress. Today I have been thinking a lot about my friend Luis, an impressive drummer who I have had the fortune of spending many hours with, especially at night. He is very grumpy, and he has told me he hates me so many times that by now I know for sure he does not mean it. This is a picture of him I took a long time ago.

La semana pasada me mudé. Regreso a Andalucía después de varios años en el norte de España. Allí he hecho muchos amigos a los que voy a echar de menos. Gontzal es uno de ellos. Entre otras muchas cosas es DJ, y ahora está en el hospital a causa de una hernia de disco (la enfermedad de los DJs, como él la llama). Debe de ser muy duro para él -es una de las personas más enérgicas que he conocido nunca-. Esto es un pequeño homenaje para que se recupere pronto.

Last week I moved back to Andalusia after some years living in the north of Spain. I made many friends there whom I am certainly going to miss. Gontzal is one of them. Among many other things, he is a DJ, and he is in hospital now due to a slipped disc (the DJ’s sickness, as he likes to call it). It must be very hard for him since he is one of the most energetic people I have met. This is just a little homage wishing him to recover soon.

Fui al Azkena Rock Festival a ver a Clutch, uno de mis grupos de hard rock preferidos. Los conciertos de las demás bandas fueron una broma al lado del espectáculo que dieron estos señores.

Off I went, to the Azkena Rock Festival in Vitoria (Spain) to see one of my favourite hard rock bands: Clutch. The rest of the concerts were a bit of a joke compared to the show these guys put together.

Presentación del nuevo disco del quinteto Gabacho Connection en Bayona. El grupo, bajo la tutela del baterista Vincent Thomas -mi amigo y mentor- hace un jazz ecléctico con resonancias de rock, reggae, etc. Muy francés. El disco es una verdadera joya. En los próximos meses tienen muchas fechas en España y Francia, un espectáculo más que recomendable.

Premiere of the first album by jazz quintet Gabacho Connection in Bayonne. The band, directed by drummer Vincent Thomas -my friend and mentor-, plays a very eclectic jazz with echoes of rock, reggae, etc.Very French indeed. The album is a gem. In the next moths they will be playing many concerts in Spain and France, a very recommendable show.

Billete de ida y vuelta a París para ver a Fu-manchu en compañía de dos amigos músicos. Gira aniversario del In search of…, tercer álbum de la banda y uno de los más legendarios, que tocaron al completo. Dejamos nuestra ciudad a las 7 de la mañana, y a la misma hora del día siguiente tomamos el tren de vuelta. Demasiado tarde para quedarse en un bar, demasiado temprano para buscar un hostal. Un concierto inolvidable, terribles dolores de cuello y muchas horas en Montparnasse.

Return trip with two fellow musicians to Paris, where Fu-Manchu were playing. Celebration of the anniversary of their third album, In search of…, which they were going to play in its entirety. We left our town at 7 am, and we had to take the train back at the same time the following day. Too late to stay in a bar but too early to look for a hostel. Unforgettable concert, severe neck pains and too many hours at Montparnasse.

El fin de semana pasado tuve sesión con Boogie Van, un trío de Rentería que lleva ya más de diez años haciendo hard rock del bueno. Suenan a Deep Purple y a Sabbath, aunque con unos riffs que huelen a stoner. Hemos cargado y descargado juntos su furgoneta en muchos conciertos, y se acordaron de mí para sacarles unas fotos. Acaban de grabar un nuevo álbum -discazo- y necesitaban material para ilustrarlo, así como para cartelería y promoción. Escuchamos música, bebimos cerveza y lo pasamos de lujo. Rock ‘n roll.

Last weekend I had a photo shoot with Boogie Van, a local trio that has been playing good hard rock for more than ten years now. They remind me of Deep Purple and Sabbath, but with guitar riffs that sometimes feel like stoner rock. We have loaded and unloaded their van together at many concerts, and they asked me to take some pictures of them. They have just recorded a fantastic new album, and they needed material for the CD, posters and marketing. We listened to music, drank beer and had a great time. Rock ‘n roll.

Hace unas semanas fui a un concierto en el que tocaba un amigo. El tipo es guitarrista, se hace llamar Benittash y ha estado con mucha gente. Hemos colaborado en un par de proyectos en el pasado, y puedo decir que es uno de los mejores guitarras que conozco, además de un gran músico. La banda en cuestión era la de Maika Makovski, una mallorquina que está teniendo bastante éxito a nivel nacional. Hacen un rock oscuro, desértico y complejo. Su último disco lo ha producido John Parish: mucha clase. El directo es explosivo y delicado casi a partes iguales. Gente que sabe lo que hace y se lo cree (importantísimo). Gracias, Benas.

A few weeks ago I went to a concert where a friend of mine was playing. The guy is a guitarist, he calls himself Benittash and he has played with many people. We have collaborated on a couple of projects in the past, and I can safely say he is one of the best guitarists I know, and a great musician as well. The band in question was that of Maika Makovski, a Majorcan girl who is having considerable success in Spain. They play a dark, desert-moodish, complex rock. His latest album was produced by John Parish himself: very classy. The live show is explosive and gentle by turns. A group of people who know what they do and believe in it (very important).
