El carril bici que une los barrios de Amara e Ibaeta, en Donostia, atraviesa un túnel de un kilómetro. En realidad se trata un antiguo túnel ferroviario que dejó de usarse. Al pasar por él, da la impresión de entrar en un paréntesis que no pertenece ni a un extremo del pasadizo ni al otro. No sólo es visualmente extraño sino que, además, la temperatura en su interior desciende de súbito. La humedad es muy intensa. Durante los minutos que dura el trayecto, el murmullo de la ciudad desaparece, y los únicos sonidos son la fricción de los neumáticos y el pedaleo, acompañados por el eco mate del túnel. A lo largo de su recorrido hay instalados 15 interfonos de emergencia, todos numerados. Creo que si no fuera por ellos, los ciclistas perderían la noción del espacio y podrían quedar atrapados allí para siempre. Una tragedia, desde luego. Como me queda poco tiempo en esta ciudad, he decidido fotografiar los interfonos, en dirección oeste. Todos a excepción de uno.
Tunnel – The bike path connecting the neighbourhoods of Ibaeta and Amara, in Donostia, runs through a tunnel almost one kilometre long. It is actually an old railroad tunnel that went out of use. Going through it makes you feel like you are entering a time frame that does not belong to either end of the tunnel. Not only it is visually quite strange, but there is also a sudden drop in temperature. Humidity is very intense. During the few minutes it takes to go from one end to the other, the murmur of the city disappears, and the only sounds are the ones from the tyres and your own pedalling, reverberated by the dull echo of the tunnel. Along its length there are 15 emergency intercoms, all numbered. I think that, were they not there, cyclists would lose their bearings and get trapped there forever. A tragedy indeed. As I have little time left in this town, I have decided to photograph the intercoms, heading westbound. All except one.
