CUATROCIENTOS

Durante mis vacaciones de navidad en el sur, acompañé a mi madre -quien regenta un pequeño negocio- a un polígono industrial del extrarradio donde se concentran cientos de almacenes chinos. Mientras ella hacía sus compras, yo la esperaba en el asiento trasero del coche. En una de las ocasiones, llamó mi ateción la figura de un señor. Al principio pensé que quizá, como yo, esperaba a alguien, pero al cabo de un par de minutos me extrañó su actitud: el hombre estaba completamente inmóvil. Salí del coche y caminé detrás de él. Otras personas entraban y salían del almacén mientras él se mantenía estático frente a la puerta. Sin alcanzar a ver su rostro, regresé al coche y continué observándole. Mi madre volvió al cabo de varios minutos y, justo antes de marcharnos, tomé esta fotografía. Mientras nos alejábamos vi cómo la figura permanecía quieta en la distancia.

The man who stood still - One day, during my Christmas holidays in the south, I accompanied my mother – who runs a small local shop – to an industrial area in the outskirts where there are hundreds of Chinese stores. While she went shopping, I waited in the back of our car. At one point, the figure of a man caught my eye. At first I thought he was, like me, waiting for someone, but after a couple of minutes his attitude made me think: the man was completely motionless. I got out and walked behind him. Other people were coming in and out of the store while he stood still outside the front door. Without seeing his face, I got back in the car and continued watching him. My mother came out after several minutes and, just before we left, I took this picture. As we drove away, I saw the figure disappear in the distance.
