Se dice por ahí -que no se diga que lo he dicho yo- que en los últimos diez años, mucha de la fotografía pseudo-documental contemporánea se ha homogeneizado; todo adquiere un aire neutro, quizá algo vacío, de simbolismos muy poco evidentes al principio pero que ya empiezan a hacerse familiares (o lo son). En parte, todo esto da qué pensar. ¿Realmente nos gustan estas fotos o, sencillamente, están de moda y no son difíciles de emular? (En esta línea, recomiendo la lectura de este artículo, que analiza y pone de manifiesto así el asunto que nos ocupa). Pues bien, a mí estas fotos me gustan y, como en todo, se pueden hacer bien, mal o fatal. Sería una barbaridad insultar al rock de los 70 basándose en el hecho de que mucha gente lo imita indiscriminadamente. No hay más que ir a un concierto de Hellacopters, de Clutch o de mil otras bandas para callar muchas bocas. Y en todo esto me ha hecho pensar la obra de Pierluigi Riccio. No sé si será un fotógrafo profesional o famoso, pero lo hace muy bien. Casi todas sus imágenes están llenas de misterio y, muchas, tienen un punto de tensión no resuelta que me atrevo a calificar de sexual. Se pueden hacer cien fotos modernas y cool, pero hacer una que sea buena es otra cosa. Atención a la serie Paradise Lost.
Some people say – not me, of course – that in the last ten years much of the contemporary pseudo-documentary photography has been homogenized; everything becomes neutral, perhaps a little empty, and full of not-so-obvious symbolisms that, by now, have become quite familiar. This makes you wonder: do we actually like these photos or are they just in fashion and very easy to emulate? (On this subject, I recommend reading this article, which discusses and illustrates the matter here). Well, I do like these pictures and, like everything else, anything can be done well, badly or awfully. It would be very stupid to criticise 70s rock by saying that many people imitate it. Just go to a concert by Hellacopters, Clutch or a thousand other great bands to understand. And Pierluigi Riccio has made me think about all this. I do not know if he is a professional or even a famous photographer, but he does the job very well. Almost all his pictures are full of mystery and, many have an unresolved tension that I would even describe as sexual. You can take a hundred modern, cool photos, but taking one that is good is another matter. Have a look at the Paradise Lost series.
