Entrevista en Seeking Magazine
El blog/magazine de fotografía contemporánea Seeking Magazine ha publicado una entrevista en la que podéis -además de ver algunas de las fotografías que conforman mi último proyecto, Popol Vuh- saber más sobre lo que hay detrás de las imágenes, tanto desde el punto de vista técnico como conceptual. Ha sido un gusto colaborar con Andrés Medina, que es el responsable y curador del magazine además de un estupendo fotógrafo. Por cierto, en breve publicaré la serie completa. Espero que os guste.
The Spanish blog Seeking Magazine has just published an interview about my latest project, Popol Vuh. As well as giving people a chance to see some of the photos, it provides an insight into the whole process, both from a technical and conceptual point of view. It has been a real pleasure to collaborate with Andrés Medina, editor and curator of the magazine, not to mention a fantastic photographer himself. By the way, I will publish the whole series shortly. I hope you enjoy it.

Galería Schuberg Philis
Schuberg Philis es una empresa basada en Holanda que cada seis meses elige varios fotógrafos del panorama internacional para ilustrar las páginas de su web. Su curadora, la fotógrafa Ana Bolívar, ha ido compilando una selección muy interesante de artistas. Además, el interfaz de la galería está muy bien hecho (con un modo pantalla completa de verdad), así que recomiendo a cualquier aficionado a la fotografía contemporánea que le eche un vistazo. Y por si todo eso fuera poco, hay una foto mía…
Schuberg Philis is a company based in Holland which, once every six months, selects several photographers from around the world to illustrate the pages of its website. Their curator, photographer Ana Bolívar, has put together a very interesting group of artists. Also, the gallery is very well built, with a real full screen mode, so I strongly recommend any contemporary photography lover to take a look. And if all this is not enough to convince you, you will fond one of my photographs there…

Más dragones (II)
Segunda parte de aquellas fotos que hice mientras hacía otras fotos. Por cierto, nunca dejará de intrigarme la distancia que crean las imágenes que uno ha capturado con el recuerdo de los momentos que recogen. De repente, da la impresión de que aquello no te pertenece y, de alguna manera, lo que recuerdas no vale. Todo está en la foto, delante de ti. Ella sustituye a la memoria -llena de defectos e inexactitudes-, de forma que eso que ves ya no es tuyo; todo se desprende de ti, y parece mentira que haya sido uno el que estaba allí, delante de aquella ventana, sacando una foto. Parece imposible.
The second part of those photos I took while taking other photos. By the way, I will always be puzzled by the gap that the images one has captured create between yourself and the moments they represent. Suddenly, all of that no longer belongs to you and, somehow, what you recall is not valid anymore. Everything is in the picture, in front of you. It is a substitute for memory – full of flaws and inaccuracies – so what you see in the image stops being yours. The thought of yourself right there, taking a photograph of that window, seems unbelievable. It seems impossible.

Lewes
Acabo de actualizar mi web con una nueva serie. Se trata de fotos hechas durante la noche en la localidad inglesa de Lewes. Empecé este pequeño proyecto hace un año, cuando sentí la necesidad de fotografiar ese lugar ajeno que, por circunstancias personales, empezaba formar parte de mi entorno. En un principio, al explorar de madrugada aquellas calles, tenía la impresión de estar solo. Un fantasma que se detenía unos momentos frente a una esquina vacía y seguía luego vagando al azar. Sin embargo, algo curioso sucedió cuando empecé a examinar las primeras imágenes: estaba absolutamente equivocado. En todas ellas había ventanas oscuras, muros, árboles,… Me di cuenta de que en esos sitios, en el fondo de aquellas sombras espesas, había siempre vigilantes silenciosos e inmóviles que me observaban mientras yo, sin saberlo, les hacía una foto.
I have just updated my website with a new series. They are pictures taken at night in Lewes, England. I started this little project about two years ago, when I felt I had to photograph that unknown place which, for personal reasons, was becoming part of my environment. At the beginning, when exploring those streets late at night, I thought I was alone. I was a ghost that stopped opposite an empty corner for a while and then kept on wandering. However, something unexpected happened when I started examining the first images: I was absolutely wrong. In all the pictures there were dark windows, walls, trees,… I realized that in those places, within the thick shadows, there were always silent spectators watching me while I took their photograph.

Más dragones (I)
Dragon Hunting, mi último proyecto, ha recibido una mención especial en la segunda Convocatoria OCEMX de Fotografía. Aquí dejo otras fotos que hice durante aquel periplo. Una especie de “detrás de la cámara” que publicaré en dos entregas, para no resultar demasiado pesado…

Un pequeño experimento. En un sendero de 660 metros disparo un carrete completo. Son 20 fotos que han de agotarse en esa distancia definida. Nunca he recorrido ese camino antes, así que no sé qué voy a encontrar. Ahora, al ver las imágenes un par de meses después de volver, me topo con algunas que en otras circunstancias jamás habría elegido: un agujero en la roca, mariposas atrapadas en una telaraña, raíces de plantas… Me hacen pensar en el niño que se detiene un instante en lo que le llama la atención para luego continuar hacia algo que ve unos metros más allá. No hay reflexión ni concepto alguno, solo curiosidad natural. Estas son las 20 fotos en el orden en que fueron tomadas.
This is a little experiment. I decide to shoot a whole roll of film in a 660 meter path. There are 20 photos that must be shot in that precise distance. I have never walked up that path before, so I do not know what I will encounter. Now, when I look at the images a couple of months after I shot them, I find some among them that I would have never chosen under other circumstances: a hole in a rock, butterflies trapped in a spider web, some roots… They make me think of a child, who stops to take a look at something for a second, and then moves on to something else a few meters ahead. There is no reflection or concept involved, just mere curiosity. These are those 20 images in the order they were shot.

Dragon hunting
Después de un año de cambios casi constantes y de la consiguiente falta de tiempo, tengo el placer de añadir una nueva galería a mi web. Dragon hunting (cazando dragones) es fruto de un viaje en coche alrededor de la isla de Taiwán. No se trata de las instantáneas de unas vacaciones, ni de una colección de fotografías sobre Taiwán; son solo imágenes que he recogido en un momento personal concreto. La serie completa, AQUÍ.
After a year of almost constant changes and a serious lack of time, I have the pleasure of adding a new gallery to my website. Dragon hunting is the result of a road trip around the island of Taiwan. These are not holiday snapshots, or a collection of photographs of Taiwan; these are just images that I took at a very precise personal moment. The whole series HERE.

After a bitter argument, I walk down to the beach. The wind whistles while I watch the storm creep onto the shore. I feel like I am inside this song.

Viaje estelar
Fotografías de la banda malagueña Negroazulado en el estudio del productor británico John Wood. Una semana intensa en la que el grupo ha grabado su primer EP, lleno de guitarras enérgicas, suaves melodías y la inconfundible voz de Sixto Jiménez. La publicación se espera para antes del verano. No sean impacientes.
Photographs of the Malaga-based band Negroazulado at the studio of British producer John Wood. An intense week’s work for the band recording their first EP, full of powerful guitars, soft melodies and the unmistakable voice of Sixto Jiménez. The album will be launched by summer. Be patient.
