Ayer justamente y por completa casualidad estaba viendo Sound City –el documental de Dave Grohl, ya convertido en un clásico– mientras escaneaba las fotografías que publico en este post. La protagonista de esa cinta es una mesa de mezclas Neve construida en los 60 que, tras ganarse disco a disco un sitio en la historia del rock universal y sucumbir al súbito éxito de la tecnología digital en los 80, acaba instalada en el estudio de Grohl. Pues bien, hace muy poco pasé nueve días en un importante estudio de grabación del sur de España. Mientras veía la película no podía dejar de acordarme de aquello. Obviamente, yo nunca he estado en Sound City, y todo lo que sé de ese lugar proviene de lo que cuenta Grohl y de algunas leyendas del rock, pero puedo asegurar que grabar en este estudio de Cádiz se parece mucho a lo que se narra en el documental: paredes de amplificadores, guitarras de todas las épocas, metros de cable que parecen no llegar a ninguna parte y, como centro de operaciones, una mesa de mezclas fabricada originalmente para los estudios Scorpio de Londres en 1976. Por sus previos pasaron Supertramp, Morrisey, Stanley Clark o Queen, y ahora está allí, rescatada por el dueño (y técnico) del estudio hace años. Aquí se sigue grabando en cinta, usando equipos de dejaron de fabricarse hace mucho, del mismo modo que algunos de nosotros cargamos aún carrete tras carrete en nuestras cámaras. Solo un Loco haría algo así. Si tocas rock ‘n roll, este sitio es tu Disneylandia.
© At the Studio – Yesterday, by complete chance, I was watching Sound City, the documentary directed by Dave Grohl – already a classic – while I scanned the photographs published in this post. The protagonist of the film is a Neve mixing board built in the 60s which, after earning a place in universal rock ‘n roll history and eventually being forgotten due to the sudden success of digital technology in the 80s, ended up being moved and installed in Grohl’s studio. Well, very recently I spent nine days in a major recording studio in southern Spain. While watching the film I could not help but remember that time. Obviously, I have never been to Sound City, and all I know about the place comes from what Grohl recounts, but I can promise that recording at this other studio in Cadiz is a lot like what the documentary says: wall-to-wall amplifiers, guitars from every decade, metres of cable that do not seem to lead anywhere and, as the control centre of the whole place, a mixing board that was originally built in 1976 for the Scorpio studios in London. Supertramp, Morrisey, Stanley Clark and Queen played through that board and now it is right there, having being rescued by the owner (and sound engineer) of this studio. There, you still record on tape, using equipment that was long since discontinued, in the same way some of us still load roll after roll of film in their cameras. Only a Loco would do that. If you love and play rock ‘n roll, this is certainly your Disneyland.
