De pie en la multitud
El 2011 ha sido un año extraño. Todo ha ocurrido de prisa, como a cámara rápida, mientras que yo no he podido más que observar en silencio, y absolutamente quieto, el curso frenético de las cosas. La multitud es tentadora, pero su paso, a pocos centímetros, te llena de frío.
Standing in the crowd – 2011 has been a strange year. Everything happened quickly, in fast forward, while I only could look around in silence, without moving, to watch the frantic pace of things. The crowd is tempting, but when it passes by, just a few centimeters away, it makes you very cold.

This is not Europe
Con la excusa de una invitación tengo la oportunidad de visitar un par ciudades suizas durante cuatro días. Meto los pies también en la vida de mi anfitrión, que me ofrece hospedarme con él. Al regreso, mirando las fotos, me he acordado del cuadro de Magritte, aquel de la pipa que decía ceci n’est pas une pipe (esto no es una pipa). Como bien se encargó de recordarnos uno de los personajes autóctonos, a pesar de lo que se ve en las imágenes y en contra de lo que pueden insinuar, eso no es Europa. La pulcritud y el orden extremos -ausencia de cualquier elemento “no deseable”- hacen que lentamente uno se percate de que, efectivamente, no lo es. Pensar en lo que se sustenta ese estatus excepcional puede molestar a muchos. En los tiempos que corren, Suiza puede no ser apta para estómagos sensibles.
With the excuse of an invitation, I recently had the opportunity to visit a couple of Swiss cities for four days. I also took a look into my host’s life, who kindly offered for me to stay with him. Now, looking at the pictures, I cannot help but remember the painting by Magritte, that one of the pipe and the text saying ceci n’est pas une pipe (this is not a pipe). As one of the locals reminded us, despite what you see in the images and against what they may suggest, Switzerland is not Europe. The extreme neatness and order, the absence of anything “undesirable”, make you slowly realize that indeed it is not Europe. Thinking about why this country maintains its exceptional status will make some people very upset. In this time and age, Switzerland may not be suitable for sensitive stomachs.

Jarra con flores
Hace un par de días revelé esta foto y, de inmediato, me acordé de uno de mis standards de jazz favoritos. Da igual cuántas vueltas dé la fotografía y sus tendencias: hay cosas que nunca dejarán de gustarme. Cada semana surgen estéticas nuevas que dicen revolucionarlo todo. Lo que hace unos meses era infalible, deja de serlo; aquellas imágenes van, poco a poco, oliendo a rancio. Hay otras, sin embargo, que parecen nunca pasar de moda y que, en mi opinión, nacen con algo que las hace perennes. Una especie de cercanía lógica, una belleza intrínseca que no sería capaz de describir pero que casi todos entendemos y experimentamos. O eso o, sencillamente, estoy chapado a la antigua.
(Recomendación para ociosos: miren la foto un ratito, al menos hasta el solo de piano).
Jar with flowers – A couple of days ago I developed this photograph and, immediately, it made me think of one of my favorite jazz standards. It does not matter how much photography changes: there are things that I will never stop liking. New trends come up everyday that seem to turn everything upside down. What used to be amazing is no longer so; little by little those images become stale. Nevertheless, there are others that never go out of fashion and that, in my humble opinion, stay fresh. Some kind of logical closeness, a natural beauty that I would not be able to describe but that we all understand and experience. Either that or I’m old fashioned.

Las tres caras de la esfera
Desde el pasado 22 de septiembre y hasta el 13 de octubre, el Centro Cultural Provincial (C/ Ollerías 34, Málaga) acoge la exposición Las tres caras de la esfera, un proyecto fotográfico en el que he trabajado junto a Manuel Jiménez Mérida y Francisco Javier López. Se trata de un ejercicio conceptual sencillo en el que cada uno, basado en una ciudad diferente, ha hecho 14 fotografías a partir de 14 palabras elegidas casi al azar. El “experimento” comprueba la repercusión de esta inversión del patrón creativo en el discurso de cada artista. Estáis todos invitados.
From September 22nd to October 13th, the Centro Cultural Provincial (C/ Ollerías 34, Málaga) is hosting the exhibition The three sides of the sphere, a photographic project on which I have worked with Francisco Javier López and Manuel Jiménez Mérida. This is a simple conceptual exercise in which each artist, living in a different city, took 14 photographs based on 14 randomly selected words. The “experiment” shows the impact of this inversion of the creative pattern in each artist’s visual speech. You are all invited.

La playa y la roca
Justo antes de mudarme pasé un fin de semana con mis amigos en Santoña. Decidí olvidarme un poco de cámaras e imágenes durante esos días. Bueno, solo un poco: limité mis ansias a una vieja Rolleiflex, un carrete y un único paseo. El fruto son estas 6 fotos. El camping de la playa -que corona la colina que hay en ella- y una roca, fotografiada desde los cuatro puntos cardinales respetando las luces y sombras del mediodía de verano.
The beach and the rock – Just before moving I spent a weekend in Santoña with my mates. I decided to forget a bit about cameras and images during those days. Well, just a little bit: I allowed myself my old Rolleiflex, one roll and a single walk. From that I got these 6 photographs. The beach campsite – set on top of the hill – and a rock, pictured from the four cardinal points and respecting the lights and shadows of the summer noon.

New Landscape Photography
Hay miles de páginas web y blogs dedicados a la fotografía y cientos que se especializan en fotografía contemporánea. Pues bien, hace tiempo descubrí uno dedicado exclusivamente a lo que se viene denominando “nueva fotografía paisajística”. Se trata del blog de Willson Cummer, fotógrafo, profesor y curador estadounidense. En él, Willson nos va presentando el trabajo de fotógrafos de este tipo provenientes de todo el mundo. Me parece una fuente formidable en la que descubrir nuevos nombres para los amantes de esta rama estética de la fotografía. Además, tengo la satisfacción de aparecer publicado. Os recomiendo que le echéis un vistazo.
There are thousands of web pages and blogs on photography, and hundreds specialized in contemporary photography. Well, some time ago I found one devoted exclusively to what is called new landscape photography. It is a blog by Willson Cummer, photographer, teacher and curator from Syracuse, NY. In it, Willson introduces us to the work of this kind of photographer from all over the world. I think it is a great source for discovering new names for lovers of this branch of photography. Also, I am fortunate to appear among the published artists. I would recommend you take a look.

10 preguntas para Scott Conarroe
Scott Conarroe es -desafortunadamente y espero que por poco tiempo- casi un desconocido en España. A pesar de disfrutar de una trayectoria envidiable en el panorama de la fotografía documental comtemporánea de Canadá y EEUU, ha pasado desapercibido para muchos de nosotros. Su reconocimiento más reciente ha sido el premio Duke and Duchess of York Prize in Photography, que ha recibido esta primavera. Debo confesar que yo no lo descubrí hasta hace poco más de un año. Desde entonces, soy un incansable seguidor de su trabajo, que recomiendo encarecidamente a los amantes de la fotografía a la vez purista y enigmática. En la entrevista que tengo el honor de publicar hoy, Scott no solo desvela aspectos formales y prácticos de su obra, sino que nos lleva de la mano por su lado más conceptual, su desarrollo como fotógrafo y su andadura por el mundo del arte. Quisiera agradecer desde aquí su afán colaborador, los valiosos consejos y, por supuesto, la impresionante obra que nos ofrece. 10 questions for Scott Conarroe - Unfortunately and I hope not for long, Scott Conarroe has been almost unknown in Spain. Despite an outstanding career in the Canadian and American scene of contemporary and documentary photography he has gone unnoticed by many of us. His latest recognition was the Duke and Duchess of York Prize in Photography, which he received last spring. I must confess I did not discover him until just over a year ago. Since then, I have been a tireless supporter of his work, which I strongly recommend to those who love a kind of photography both purist and enigmatic. In the interview that I have the honor of publishing today, Scott reveals not only formal and practical aspects of his work, but he also tells us about his conceptual side, his development as a photographer and his journey through the world of art. I would like to thank him for his sincere collaboration, his priceless advice and, of course, the impressive body of work he offers to us. Do not be scared by the length of the text: I promise it is well worth it.
